Incoming Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly planning a blockbuster transfer window at the Emirates Stadium as he prepares to take charge. The 53-year-old Italian, who left Atletico Madrid in January, has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Edu Gaspar following the Brazilian’s resignation.
Reports suggest that Arsenal have already agreed terms with Berta, who boasts an impressive track record, having played a key role in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga triumph and previous success at several Italian clubs. Now, the experienced executive is said to be eyeing a marquee signing to mark his arrival in North London.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Berta has set his sights on Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal have long admired the Brazilian and were linked with a move for him last summer. The 27-year-old has been instrumental for Newcastle since his £40 million transfer from Lyon in 2022 and recently signed a contract extension until 2028.

However, Guimaraes reportedly has a release clause allowing him to leave for £60 million this summer if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League. With five English clubs set to participate in next season’s tournament, Newcastle currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, level on points with fifth-placed Manchester City.

Berta, a known admirer of Guimaraes, previously attempted to sign him three times while at Atletico Madrid. Now, he has allegedly reached out to the midfielder’s representatives to express Arsenal’s strong interest.

Arsenal’s midfield is set for a shake-up, with Thomas Partey and Jorginho both expected to leave at the end of the season when their contracts expire. In response, the Gunners are targeting multiple reinforcements, including Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi. The 26-year-old Spaniard, who rejected a move to Liverpool last summer, is reportedly close to joining Arsenal in a £50 million deal.
Mikel Arteta’s side aims to bolster their midfield with both Zubimendi and Guimaraes, as they look to strengthen their squad for another title challenge. Crucially, Arsenal remain one of the few Premier League clubs not constrained by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), giving them significant financial flexibility in the market.
Meanwhile, Arsenal continue their Champions League campaign with a crucial second-leg clash against PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16 on March 12.
