Mikel Merino scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a 2-2 draw for Spain against the Netherlands after Jorrel Hato’s late red card derailed the hosts’ strong performance in Rotterdam.

Spain took an early lead against the run of play after a defensive error from Hato, who was dispossessed by Lamine Yamal. The young winger quickly set up his Barcelona teammate Pedri, who squared the ball to Nico Williams. The Athletic Bilbao forward made no mistake, firing home in the ninth minute.

Despite the early setback, the Netherlands grew into the game, dominating possession and eventually finding an equaliser in the 28th minute. Jeremie Frimpong’s surging run sparked a well-worked attack, allowing Cody Gakpo to finish with a low strike past Unai Simón.

The Dutch continued their momentum after the break and wasted little time taking the lead. Just a minute into the second half, Frimpong once again played a crucial role, bursting into the Spanish box before teeing up Tijjani Reijnders. The AC Milan midfielder produced a stunning finish into the far corner, leaving Spain trailing.

Spain struggled to break through a resolute Dutch defence, but the game turned in the 82nd minute when Hato was sent off for a reckless challenge. With the numerical advantage, Spain piled on the pressure, and in the 93rd minute, their persistence paid off. Williams’ effort was parried by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Merino reacted quickest to slot home the rebound, salvaging a draw for La Roja.

Merino, who has been deployed as a makeshift striker for Arsenal in the absence of Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, has been enjoying his attacking role. His recent performances have been impressive, including his crucial contributions in Spain’s penalty shootout victory in the second leg of their Nations League quarter-final against the Dutch.

Following the game, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente heaped praise on Merino and his former Real Sociedad teammate Mikel Oyarzabal, highlighting their versatility and leadership qualities.

“They are great footballers with exceptional talent,” De la Fuente said. “They bring maturity, calmness, and a strong team spirit. They can play in multiple positions and always perform at a high level. Off the pitch, they provide experience and stability, which is invaluable for the squad.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action against Fulham this weekend, with Mikel Arteta hoping Merino carries his goalscoring form into a crucial run of fixtures.
