Luka Modric has urged his Real Madrid teammates to remain focused and not get distracted by the looming Champions League quarter-final clash with Arsenal.
The Spanish giants secured their place in the last eight following a controversial victory over local rivals Atlético Madrid, while Arsenal’s progression was confirmed even before their 2-2 draw against PSV Eindhoven.
Despite their differing paths to the quarter-finals, Real Madrid will enter the tie as strong favourites, given their pedigree in Europe’s elite competition. However, Modric is refusing to look too far ahead, emphasising the importance of focusing on upcoming domestic fixtures.
Speaking after Real Madrid’s dramatic penalty shootout win over Atlético, the 39-year-old midfielder stressed that his team cannot afford to lose sight of their immediate priorities.

“We will see, there’s still a long way to go until that match,” Modric said. “Now we have to focus on Villarreal and go calmly into the international break. Arsenal is a very good team, and it’s going to be another interesting knockout round. But first, we need to prepare for Villarreal, win there, and then we’ll take the time to think about Arsenal.”

“The first thing is that you have to be at your best for both games, for every minute,” Arteta said when asked about the challenge of facing Real Madrid.
“Don’t give anything away, because they will capitalise on any mistake. Today, we saw that with the two goals we conceded, so that’s a big learning point.”
He also highlighted the significance of individual performances and home support in determining the outcome of the tie.
“In the end, the game will be decided in the boxes. Individual talent and performances are crucial, and creating an unbelievable atmosphere at home will be vital.”
