Real Madrid are plotting to derail Arsenal’s pursuit of Spain and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, as the 26-year-old continues to attract significant transfer interest.
Zubimendi has long been on Arsenal’s radar, with the Gunners eyeing him as a key solution to their midfield concerns, especially with Thomas Partey and Jorginho both out of contract at the end of the season. Reports in January suggested Arsenal were close to sealing a £51 million deal for the Spaniard, but their plans could now be in jeopardy.
According to Diario AS, Real Madrid are eager to strengthen their Spanish core and have identified Zubimendi as a prime target. With La Liga regulations requiring clubs to have at least eight homegrown players in their squad by the 2025/26 season, Zubimendi’s arrival would help Madrid meet that quota while also reinforcing an already star-studded midfield.

Zubimendi, who previously turned down a move to Liverpool last summer, appears ready to take the next step in his career. The midfielder has been a standout performer for Real Sociedad in recent years and played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 success.

Real Madrid’s potential swoop adds further competition for his signature, with Manchester City and Liverpool also reportedly interested.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Gunners have long admired the Brazilian and were linked with a move for him last summer. The 27-year-old has been instrumental for Newcastle since his £40 million transfer from Lyon in 2022 and recently signed a contract extension until 2028.
However, Guimaraes reportedly has a release clause allowing him to leave for £60 million this summer if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League.
